“A journey back to the roots of tango, played from the heart.” — TangoSparks, 2026

Led by pianist Yasushi Ozawa (小沢 泰), Orquesta Típica Corrientes was one of the notable Japanese tango orquestas active during the country’s postwar tango boom. By the late 1950s, Ozawa and Corrientes were already well established on the Tokyo tango scene, performing regularly and occasionally working with visiting Argentine musicians.

Nearly two decades after the original band ceased regular activity, Corrientes was revived for a special recording project conceived by tango researcher and producer Yoshihiro Oiwa (大岩祥浩). His idea was simple but unusual: to recreate the spirit of classic Argentine tango through veteran Japanese musicians who had themselves lived through Japan’s golden age of tango.

Recorded on May 26, 1978, the album drew its repertoire mainly from works composed between 1900 and the early 1930s. Rather than adopting a contemporary tango sound, Ozawa and his musicians looked directly to Argentine recordings from approximately 1927–1935 as their musical models.

Although these recordings were previously reissued on CD by AMP, the sound quality was less than satisfactory. TS 7.01 restores these remarkable recordings using state-of-the-art technology, presenting them with exceptional clarity and fidelity.

Producer Yoshihiro Oiwa's goal was to combine the musical language of the old records with modern recording quality. The group was also limited to a traditional 3b+3v orquesta típica setting, and virtuosity was not intended as an end in itself.

The session was recorded in stereo with a deliberately straightforward approach, avoiding excessive reverberation or effects. The musicians shared a determination to play what they understood as “real tango.” Listening from the control room, producer Oiwa felt that they were, in his words, “playing tango from the heart.”

That idea remains at the heart of this 1978 recording, as presented here as TS 7.01.
