“The golden age of Biagi and Duval. Classics that have echoed in milongas for decades.” — TangoSparks, 2026

In 1956, Rodolfo Biagi left Odeón after eighteen years and joined Columbia. If the early 1950s represented a period of transition, the Columbia recordings stand as the definitive expression of Biagi’s late style. During this era, arranger Oscar de la Fuente continued to expand the role of the violins, and thanks to significant advances in recording technology, the results were remarkably vivid.

Hugo Duval was Biagi’s sole vocalist throughout this period. Of the twenty recordings included here, eighteen feature Duval, alongside two Guardia Vieja instrumentals recorded in 1961 after Oscar’s departure: Venus and Bar Exposición. The list of classics from this era is almost endless: Soñemos, Espérame en el Cielo, Todo es Amor, En el Lago Azul, as well as the two charming waltzes Como en un Cuento and Ramona.

Around twenty years ago, Euro Records released a now-classic CD edition of these recordings. From today's perspective, that transfer suffers from several significant shortcomings, most notably an imbalance between high and low frequencies, a lack of bass presence, and incorrect playback speeds.

With TS 2.22, TangoSparks revisits these Columbia recordings through meticulous restoration work, correcting these issues and revealing the exceptional sound quality that has always been hidden within the original sources.

Columbia's recording and pressing standards during this period were exceptionally high, matching and in some respects even surpassing those of contemporary Odeón and Víctor. The principal challenge, much like the later Music Hall recordings, lies in the complex process of stylus selection. The objective is to preserve the treble while fully revealing the powerful bass response preserved in the originals.

La Canción and Ayúdame, for example, retain clear midrange and treble frequencies on the Euro Records CD, yet suffer from severely uneven bass reproduction. Conversely, Espérame en el Cielo loses a substantial portion of its treble content. In addition, almost every source exhibits a pitch error of approximately ±1.5%, equivalent to roughly a quarter-tone.

Our task was to address all of these issues and present these recordings in the best condition possible. TS 2.22 is a dedicated refinement, an edition created for devoted Biagi enthusiasts and for DJs and collectors who seek the highest possible level of sound quality.
