TS 2.21 - Rodolfo Biagi 1962

In 1962, Rodolfo Biagi not only moved to the Argentine label Music Hall, but also recruited a new vocalist, Carlos Almagro. With his rich, deeply expressive voice, Almagro provided an excellent contrast to Hugo Duval, creating a remarkably balanced vocal lineup.
What makes these recordings particularly remarkable is that, even in the final stage of his career, Biagi had reached complete artistic maturity while still maintaining an exceptionally high standard of performance. This carefully selected collection of twelve recordings includes three instrumentals, four performances by Hugo Duval, and five by Carlos Almagro.
Previously a singer with Miguel Caló’s orchestra, Almagro possessed a talent equal to many of the leading vocalists of the Golden Age. Unfortunately, like many outstanding singers who emerged in the late 1950s, he arrived at a time when tango’s golden era had already passed.
Every recording in this collection represents first-rate dance tango at its finest. After meticulous restoration, these recordings are now presented in TS 2.21 with the finest sound quality currently achievable. Forever Don Rodolfo!
By the 1960s, Music Hall had made some advances in recording technology. The quality of this batch of recordings is broadly comparable to Biagi’s Columbia recordings of the 1950s.
The surviving source material reveals, however, that Music Hall’s cutting and pressing quality was not entirely free of flaws. Many discs exhibit issues similar to those often encountered on late-1950s LPs from Odeón and Víctor. As a result, stylus selection became one of the principal challenges, and we frequently switched among four or five different styli in search of the most accurate groove contact.
Extensive EQ carving was also required throughout the mastering process. Our goal was to reveal the semi-hi-fi sound quality these recordings preserve.
Despite their musical excellence, these recordings have not yet achieved the recognition they deserve, largely because later CD transfers were carelessly handled. We hope that the release of TS 2.21 will help fill that gap and allow these outstanding dance recordings to return to their rightful place on tango dance floors.
