On December 16, 1970, two days after his seventieth birthday, D’Arienzo was back in the recording studio. Among the pieces recorded that day were Con Alma Y Nervio, sung by Armando Laborde: a tribute to the maestro Juan D'Arienzo, A fitting centrepiece for this collection; Alberto Echagüe returns to Paciencia, which he had already recorded with D’Arienzo in 1951; Tuve Que Llorar, a touching piece by Osvaldo Ramos.
The programme includes four milongas: El Látigo, Zapatitos De Raso, Milonga De Mis Amores and Tremolina. Osvaldo Ramos and Armando Laborde each contribute two solo performances and join voices in Zapatitos De Raso.
TS 2.07 brings together the thirteen released recordings from October 29 and December 16, 1970: seven instrumentals and six vocal performances. Carefully restored, they continue our exploration of the King’s later years.
These recordings were originally spread across various releases. Bringing them together in this collection allows us to hear the two recording sessions as a whole.
The quality of the surviving sources from this period is noticeably better than that of earlier recordings, with essentially complete stereo material available for most tracks. Nevertheless, addressing certain issues still required considerable effort. For example, the overloaded passages at the climax of Tremolina needed additional restoration work, while Habla Un Milonga appears to have a faint stereo image.
A = 442 Hz remains our pitch reference for this period. With material drawn from several editions, the aim is a consistent listening experience that preserves the orchestra’s natural tone.
