In September 1971, RCA chose Juan D’Arienzo to inaugurate its new recording studio in Buenos Aires. The original sleeve proudly brings together two attractions: the unmistakable character of the King of Rhythm and the company’s “new sound.” After decades with the label, D’Arienzo was still the musician entrusted with introducing its latest recording facilities.
Recorded on September 16 and 30, the twelve tangos were released as Sacale Chispas. The programme comprises seven instrumentals, two songs each by Osvaldo Ramos and Armando Laborde, and one by Alberto Echagüe.
TS 2.06 brings this complete album together in a carefully restored edition, adding another chapter to our exploration of D’Arienzo’s later years. We hope you enjoy it.
There is an interesting detail in the 1971 Sep 16 session: Jorge Dragone replaced Juan Polito at the piano while Polito was ill. Given the piano’s central role in D’Arienzo’s orchestra, this is worth keeping in mind when listening to these recordings, such as the sparkling glissando Dragone frequently used.
A = 442 Hz remains our pitch reference for D’Arienzo in this period. The speed sits stably at 33.33rpm with only a slight offset in several tracks.
