Alberto Morán was finally ready to embark on his solo career. His final recordings with the Pugliese orchestra represent perhaps the absolute pinnacle of the Cantor de Orquesta in tango.
"San José de Flores" was Morán's signature piece. The poetic rubato phrasing gave the singer ample space to express profound emotions. The other five tracks, including "Desvelo""La Última Copa"and "La Mentirosa," were carefully selected to highlight Morán's unique artistry: his heart-wrenching high notes, extraordinary volume and tonal control, and emotionally charged dynamics. Truly, no one else could achieve such intensity.
TS 1.10 compiles Morán's final six recordings with Pugliese, made between 1953 and 1954. These songs are beloved classics in milonga climaxes and maestros' staple performance choices. Now, Tango Sparks presents these legendary tracks to the public with the ultimate resolution.
These six tracks are undoubtedly classics among classics, but from a restoration perspective, working on them has been far from straightforward. Surprisingly, the sound quality of existing sources for these recordings is inferior to those from the sessions of November and December 1952. This puzzling fact can perhaps only be explained by suggesting that the master tapes of Pugliese's first LP in 1952 were preserved more carefully over the years.
A prime example is “Desvelo,” one of Moran’s most celebrated masterpieces. The arrangement, orchestral execution, and Moran’s vocal performance are impeccable. Yet, from the first pressings to subsequent reissues, the audio quality remains consistently disappointing, not to mention the inferior CD releases. "La Última Copa" provides another striking case: the currently available CD version is so poorly produced that one might suspect it was transferred from a cassette tape.
"La Mentirosa", on the other hand, benefits from a relatively better transfer by Reliquias, which likely contributes to its popularity today. Nevertheless, excessive noise reduction has led to a dull, compromised tonal quality.
We have carefully compared all existing 78 rpm, 10″, and 12″ LP versions of these six tracks, selecting and restoring the best available sources. With the release of this mini-album (TS 1.10), we hope to provide a definitive closure to the quest for optimal versions of these legendary recordings.
