“An enchanting reunion. The final glow of Caló and tango’s Golden Age.” — Tango Sparks, 2025

After years of relative quiet, Miguel Caló achieved a brilliant revival in 1963 by reuniting his stars from his famous early 1940s orchestra. With the exception of the late Osmar Maderna and Raúl Iriarte, who had settled in Colombia, nearly all of the key musicians returned, plus several others: Domingo Federico, Armando Pontier, Tomás Giannini, Orlando Rizzo, Héctor Corrali (bandoneón), Orlando Tripodi (piano), Enrique Francini, Hugo Baralis, Milo Dojman, Fernando Suárez Paz, Luis Cantafio (violins), and Mario Monteleone (bass).

In addition to programmes on Radio El Mundo and Canal 7, the orchestra recorded an LP for Odeón Argentina between April and June 1963. The sessions included four songs with Alberto Podestá, four with Raúl Berón, and four instrumentals. The arrangements, primarily shaped by Federico, Tripodi, and Pontier, preserved the character of Caló’s 1940s style while giving space for virtuosity. At the center was Enrique Francini, then concertmaster of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, whose dazzling solos throughout the sessions remain among the most inspired tango violins ever captured on record.

This reunion not only revitalized Caló’s artistic legacy but also sustained his orchestra’s success until the end of his career. Alongside Podestá's immortal Qué falta que me hacés, the sessions yielded treasures such as El mismo final, Berón’s En la calle and Pa’ lo que te va a durar, and the instrumentals Para Osmar Maderna and Brazo de oro.

With the release of TS 6.01, these recordings are presented with unmatched clarity and power for intimate listening and the energy of the dance floor, fulfilling the dream of experiencing the EdO as if live.

It has always been a curious fact that these superb performances have not circulated more widely. In reality, after nearly vanishing in 1962, Caló’s orquesta received a powerful boost from this reunion with his former stars in 1963, a project that proved highly successful both commercially and artistically. Orlando Tripodi, taking over the piano stool once belonging to Osmar Maderna, fulfilled his task with near perfection.

Few have noticed that, aside from the 1959 recordings made during Caló’s Brazil, this LP was the first full album Caló recorded on Argentine soil. The production sought a vivid, live sound with a single-microphone setup instead of a stereo system. Podestá shines across his four tracks, while the instrumental pieces are equally bright and transparent. Berón’s voice, due to both timbre and microphone distance, sometimes produced excessive breath noise and occasional plosives, which have been addressed with targeted restoration.

Among the previous reissues, only the four instrumentals offered on EU-19003 are of acceptable quality, alongside the many circulated versions of Qué falta que me hacés. All other tracks have remained unavailable in any official CD or digital release, and the few existing private transfers fall short in sound.

The mission of this album is to present these treasures with the best fidelity possible. We believe that in the near future, these classic songs will gain the popularity they deserve among tango dancers and listeners.
