“A tough man with a tender heart; passionate collaboration with the Maestro.” — Tango Sparks, 2026

Among tango’s bass-baritone singers, "tough-guy" personas were far more common. This makes the presence of Miguel Montero unusual. With dramatic intensity and a plaintive tone comparable to Morán, phrasing and streetwise character worthy of Chanel, this singer from Tucumán, known as “El Negro de Oro,” was undoubtedly one of Pugliese’s finest vocalists. His partnership with Maciel also reached a level comparable to the classic Chanel–Morán binomio.

Before Montero joined Pugliese, he was with Lomuto. Although the style was not an ideal fit for him, they nevertheless reflected the fashion. In 1954, he joined Pugliese together with Mario Demarco, filling the vacancies left by vocalist Juan Carlos Cobos and bandoneonist Jorge Caldara.

Montero’s years with Pugliese marked the peak of his vocal powers. TS 1.14 includes eight recordings he made between 1954 and 1956, together with one duet with Maciel. Among them are numerous classics, including Antiguo Reloj De Cobre, A La Luz Del Candil, Qué Te Pasa Buenos Aires, and others. Presented here in exceptional sound quality, the power of music becomes even more unforgettable.

Montero’s dramatic, powerful delivery, despite his baritone register, created difficulties in certain passages similar to those encountered in Maciel’s recordings. As always, our restoration principle remained the same: preserve as much of the original character as possible, while applying conservative corrections to obvious faults and imperfections.

The surviving CD editions from this period are not good enough, but our work is aimed at taking the sound to the best. Qué Te Pasa Buenos Aires is a perfect example: in the release of its final twenty seconds, Montero seems almost to be standing directly in front of you, shouting straight into your face.

We hope TS 1.14 will allow more listeners to experience the extraordinary charisma of Miguel Montero.
