“The richest golden voice Marino with Maestro Miguel Caló, breathtaking performances.” — Tango Sparks, 2025

The 1967 recordings represent the pinnacle of Miguel Caló’s late period where both the maestro’s orchestra and the seasoned baritone Alberto Marino reached a level of artistic maturity few could rival.

Marino was one of the greatest tango voices of EdO. With a tenor range, his baritone timbre remained rich, magnetic, and resonant, seemingly gilded with gold, true to his legendary nickname “La voz de oro del tango.” Between 1943 and 1947, his work with Pichuco established his iconic status before his remarkably successful solo career.

By 1967, long since acclaimed as a maestro, Marino was invited to record with Caló’s orquesta for the first time. The repertoire covered timeless classics while advocated some contemporary tango pieces.

TS 6.07 presents all twelve tracks laid out in the May–June 1967 sessions: eight vocal pieces and four instrumentals, split evenly between classic and contemporary compositions. Highlights include Entre Dos, Porteñísimo (instrumental), Cuando Caigan Las Hojas, Cilicio, and Cafetín de Buenos Aires. These are now restored and released in quality surpassing any previously available.

We are delighted to bring these remarkable 1967 recordings back to life with unprecedented clarity and fidelity. The stereo layout follows Caló’s late-period convention: for instrumental tracks, bandoneons left / violins right, and for vocal tracks, violins left / bandoneons right—except for Entre Dos, Snobismo, and Mi Tango Triste, whose channels on the original album were inverted and have now been corrected.

Compared with the 1966 sessions, the 1967 takes show closer microphone placement and finer instrumental details, with the piano precisely set at A=442 Hz. Prior CD editions included only the four instrumentals (in EU-19003); astonishingly, none of Marino’s performances were ever officially reissued, apart from a few private transfers.

Caló’s orchestra was perhaps second only to Troilo’s in its ability to adapt to singers of different styles. Over the decades, Caló collaborated with an extraordinary roster of vocalists, and this long-overlooked encounter with Marino ranks among the finest. With the release of TS 6.07, these recordings have not only resurfaced, but are now presented in their best possible sound quality.

Enjoy.
