TS 2.02 - Juan D’Arienzo 1974
Tags: Juan D'Arienzo, Singer, InstrumentalCategory: AlbumSamples
In December 1974, just over a month before Juan D'Arienzo's final recording session, he recorded a remarkable set of twelve performances devoted entirely to Francisco Lomuto: a personal tribute with the repertoire entirely chosen by D'Arienzo himself, reflecting his admiration for this great predecessor.
Having risen to prominence during the formative decades of tango in the 1910s and 1920s, Francisco Lomuto played a crucial role in the evolution of the genre. His artistic development was closely intertwined with that of his friend Francisco Canaro, who helped shape both Lomuto's career and style. Lomuto's compositions possess the sincerity and simplicity of tango, qualities that allowed many of them to become enduring classics.
D'Arienzo revisits these works through his own unmistakable musical language, infusing them with the drive, vitality, and electrifying energy that earned him the title El Rey del Compás. The twelve recordings feature three tracks each by Alberto Echagüe, Armando Laborde, and Osvaldo Ramos, alongside two instrumentals and a Laborde–Ramos duet. Among the best-known titles are Sombras Nada Más, Nunca Más, Muñequita, and Mala Suerte, as well as Lomuto's very first tango, La Rezongona, composed in 1914.
TS 2.02 presents all twelve recordings from these historic 1974 sessions, newly restored to reveal their full power.
As with many Victor recordings from the mid-1970s, these sessions display the label's high standards of stereo production. The originals already possess a natural stereo image, stable pitch, wide dynamic range, and a pleasing tonal balance. Nevertheless, careful restoration remained essential to capture the information, removing imperfections and ensuring consistency across all twelve tracks.
Existing commercial transfers have never fully let out the magic contained in these recordings. Our goal with TS 2.02 is to provide what we hope will become the definitive presentation of these sessions, allowing listeners to experience the artistry of late D'Arienzo with a clarity never heard before.
